Our Most Asked Questions, Answered Honestly
Share
After thousands of conversations with cyclists like you (and six years developing our folding helmet), we've heard pretty much every question imaginable. Here are your most common questions, answered as honestly as we can.
"£89.99 seems expensive for a helmet. Is it really worth it?"
Yes, our helmets cost more than basic models. Here's why:
- We manufacture in the UK, not overseas
- Our patented Flip-Clip mechanism took years of engineering to perfect
- We're a small company making a premium product in small batches
But the real value is having a helmet you'll actually wear consistently. Many of our customers tried cheaper helmets first, only to leave them at home because they were too inconvenient to carry.
As James from London told us: "I initially hesitant because of the price, but after almost a year of use, it's one of the best purchases I've made. I actually wear it every ride now, which wasn't true before."
"I already have a helmet. Why should I switch?"
If you're consistently wearing your current helmet for every single ride, that's fantastic!
But ask yourself honestly: do you sometimes leave it at home because you don't want to carry it around all day? Do you skip wearing it for short trips?
Our existing customers typically had a helmet before buying ours. What changed was how often they actually wore it. When a helmet fits in your bag rather than dangling awkwardly from your arm or handlebars, you're much more likely to have it with you.
"I'm still deciding. What should I consider?"
Take your time! This isn't a decision to rush. Here are some things to consider:
- How often do you find yourself without your helmet when you wish you had it?
- What's your post-ride routine like? Do you typically carry your helmet into shops, cafés, or work?
- Would having a more portable helmet change how often you cycle or how protected you feel?
If you have specific questions that might help you decide, feel free to drop us an email.
"How do I know if it will fit my head?"
Our helmets adjust to fit head circumferences between 56-61cm, which covers most adult heads.
Not sure of your size? Grab a piece of string or a tape measure and wrap it around the widest part of your head (about 1cm above your eyebrows). This measurement in centimeters is your head circumference.
If you're right at the edges of our size range (particularly if you're over 60cm), feel free to email us before ordering.
And for those with larger head sizes, we've got good news. We're working on a bigger size that should be ready soon. Stay tuned.
"I use rental bikes and don't want to carry gear around. Is this for me?"
Bike-share riders are exactly who we had in mind when we created Newlane!
The whole point of services like Santander Cycles and Lime is spontaneity - grab a bike whenever you need one. But that usually means riding without a helmet because who carries one just in case?
Our rental bike users tell us they keep their folded Newlane in their regular bag or backpack. This way, they're always safe for those unplanned rides without adding extra hassle.
"How do I know it's as safe as a regular helmet?"
Our helmets meet exactly the same EN 1078 safety certification as every other bike helmet sold in the UK and Europe. There's no separate, easier standard for folding helmets, we pass the same rigorous impact tests.
The folding mechanism locks securely when in the "wear" position, creating a structure that's just as protective as traditional helmets. When you're wearing it, it functions exactly like a non-folding helmet.
"I want to read more reviews before deciding. Where can I find them?"
We totally get that! Here's where you can find honest customer feedback:
- Our review page has over 130 verified customer reviews. Check them here
- Check out independent cycling publications like CyclingWeekly and BikeRadar, who've tested our helmets
We're proud of our overall 4.9/5 star rating from over 3,000 riders, but individual experiences matter more than statistics.
"What if I buy it and don't like it?"
We offer our standard returns policy in line with consumer regulations. If you receive your helmet and it's not what you expected or doesn't work for you, you can return it in its original condition and packaging.
Our 4.9/5 star rating from over 3,000 riders suggests most people are pretty happy with their decision, but we understand that everyone's needs are different.
"How durable is the folding mechanism?"
We built this thing to last. The folding mechanism has been through some serious testing - thousands of open-close cycles without failing.
Our engineer (who previously designed parts for Aston Martin) insisted on using materials that would stand up to daily abuse. This isn't flimsy plastic that'll snap after a few months.
The real test? We've had over 3,000 customers using these helmets daily, in all kinds of weather, stuffing them in bags, dropping them, and the folding mechanism keeps working. That's the durability proof that actually matters.
Ready to make the switch?
At the end of the day, what matters most isn't having a helmet, it's actually wearing one consistently. That's what Newlane was designed for.
Over 3,000 riders have already discovered the freedom of a helmet that folds to half its size. One that fits in your bag when you're not riding. One that makes safety convenient.
Because the best helmet in the world is useless if it's sitting at home when you need it.
